Iterated stretching and multiple beads-on-a-string phenomena in dilute solutions of highly extensible flexible polymers

چکیده
The dynamics of elastocapillary thinning in high molecular weight polymer solutions are reexamined using high-speed digital video microscopy. At long times, the evolution of the viscoelastic thread deviates from self-similar exponential decay and the competition of elastic, capillary, and inertial forces leads to the formation of a periodic array of beads connected by axially uniform ligaments. This configuration is itself unstable and successive instabilities propagate from the necks connecting the beads and the ligaments. This iterated process results in the development of multiple generations of beads in agreement with the predictions of Chang, Demekin, and Kalaidin “Iterated stretching of viscoelastic jets,” Phys. Fluids 11, 1717 1999 although experiments yield a different recursion relation between successive generations. At long times, finite molecular extensibility truncates the iterated instability and axial translation of the bead arrays along the interconnecting threads leads to a progressive coalescence before the rupture of the filament. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. Iterated Stretching, Extensional Rheology and Formation of Beads-on-a- String Structures in Polymer Solutions
The transient extensional rheology and the dynamics of elastocapillary thinning in aqueous solutions of polyethylene oxide (PEO) are studied with high-speed digital video microscopy. متن کاملMultiple Solutions for Slip Effects on Dissipative Magneto-Nanofluid Transport Phenomena in Porous Media: Stability Analysis
In the present paper, a numerical investigation of transport phenomena is considered in electrically-conducting nanofluid flow within a porous bed utilizing Buongiorno’s transport model and Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order method. Induced flow by non-isothermal stretching/shrinking sheet along with magnetic field impact, dissipation effect, and slip conditions at the surface are...
متن کاملBeads-on-string phenomena in wormlike micellar fluids
We present experimental results on the dynamics of wormlike micellar filaments surrounded by an immiscible viscous bulk fluid. For certain concentrations, these filaments develop a beads-on-string structure previously observed only in polymer jets and filaments surrounded by air. By taking advantage of the longer time scales present in this experiment, we are able to quantify the evolution of i...
متن کاملEffect of a controlled pre-deformation history on extensional viscosity of dilute polymer solutions
We use a modified filament stretching rheometer to quantify the influence of a known controlled pre-shear history on the transient extensional viscosity of a dilute polymer solution. Two different types of pre-deformation are explored; both influence the subsequent stretching significantly, albeit in opposite ways. Small-amplitude oscillatory straining parallel to the direction of stretching en...
متن کاملFolding of electrostatically charged beads-on-a-string as an experimental realization of a theoretical model in polymer science.
The "beads-on-a-string" model for folding of polymers is a cornerstone of theoretical polymer science. This communication describes a physical model of beads-on-a-string, based on the folding of flexible strings of electrostatically charged beads in two dimensions. The system comprises millimeter-scale Teflon and Nylon-6,6 (spherical or cylindrical) beads (approximately 6 mm in diameter) separa...
